FRANCiSCAN SITES
Assisi
Complete the visit of Assisi with three
beautiful sites, nestled in the lovely countryside of Assisi
and linked to Saint Francis life: the Church of Saint
Damiano, the Hermitage and the Porziuncola.
In the tiny church of Saint Damiano,
Saint Francis heard the call to conversion: "Francesco! Go
and repair my house because as you can see it is falling
down!" (Legenda Maior). Few years later, the church
and the attached building became the convent of the first
poor claires.
The Hermitage, the place where Saint
Francis and his first followers retreated praying in
solitude, is located at about 900 meters altitude, not far
from the top of Mount Subasio.
The Porziuncola is a tiny church hidden
inside the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels. This is
where Saint Francis used to live with his very first
followers. Here Francis received the forgiveness from Jesus
"the Forgiveness of Assisi". Here Francis died on the
evening of 3 October 1226.
Both the Hermitage and Saint Damiano
cannot be reached with regular coaches; minivans can be
rented instead.
