Situated on top of a hill, Todi strategically dominates the Tiber-valley. Called Tular in ancient times, which literally means “border”, the city was an important centre between the Etruscan and the Umbrian civilizations.

The visitor is welcomed by the elegant “temple” of the Consolazione, masterpiece of renaissance architecture. The main monuments in the centre are the imposing gothic St Fortunato church and the Piazza del Popolo, ancient Roman forum with the underground Roman cisterns, and today’s site of the romanesque cathedral and the medieval public palaces.

Todi is the home-town of Jacopone, a franciscan poet considered one of the fathers of Italian language.

The usual appointment with the local guide is at the "Temple of Consolation" (Santa Maria della Consolazione). After the visit of this monument, the bus will park at the parking of Porta Orvietana. An elevator will bring the group up to the centre. Parking fee by the hour; the elevator is free of charge.
